Genetic Improvement Breeding by Breeding

We make our breeding decisions on the basis of genetics rather than results in the show ring. Each female is evaluated for the traits she excels in and what she needs to improve on. We match her with an appropriate herdsire on that basis. This is why we can compete successfully in the ring with large farms that bring their top of the line crias for the year, and we take home ribbons.

We breed mainly for solid colors and most importantly a solid blanket. In suris, we focus on improving fineness with luster. In huacayas, we breed for high frequency crimp and brightness. We have a goal on our farm to reduce our micron count each year while keeping our yield by increasing density or staple length. As far as colors, we breed mostly for black, grey and fawn huacayas and fawn to black suris.

We are very careful about line breeding after raising dogs for over 35 years and seeing how issues can arise with the best of intentions. All of our clients have the option to utilize our studs at discounted rates for as long as they raise alpacas.

Years of Experience Provide the Basis for Our Superlative Training and Support

We have been raising alpacas since the late 90's. We enjoy mentoring new farms and often work with farms that purchased their original alpacas elsewhere, but who need guidance and ongoing education and support. We have had a number of emergency calls for birthing and illness related issues so we have tried to help educate the newer breeders in our area for their benefit and the well-being of their herd. We also offer seminars here at our farm.

We believe that as an industry we are stronger working with each other than against each other. We have built a network of local farms that are reputable, and if we don’t have what a customer is looking for and we know someone who does, we will refer them.

We stand behind our alpacas, and offer ongoing support to our clients.

Showing and Ribbons

We are active at the alpaca shows including showing at the Futurity and MAPACA, usually staying with the western states' shows. Most all of our alpacas have placed in the ring! When we first started out, we showed everything on the farm and placed with them all. As we have grown, we don’t have that ability to take them all now. Our current herd includes champions and reserve champions and many ribbon winners.

Be sure to take a close look at our champion black huacaya, Blackhawk, whose first crias are due this year. Also our champion suri, Mount Olympus, produces consistent winners no matter what dam we put him on and he is producing colorful offspring.
